BreakingNews 7/3/16: PDP Candidate, Ohuabunwa Declared Winner of Abia North Senatorial Re-run Election

[ Masterweb Reports  ] – The Independent National Election Commission (INEC)
on Sunday, March 6 declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Mao Ohuabunwa winner of Abia North senatorial re-run election held on March 5. The declaration took place at Ohafia local government headquarters hours after the electoral body`s returning officer declared the exercise inconclusive. The reversal was due to the fact that INEC hierarchy argued that re-run elections could not be declared inconclusive due to narrow margin of victory, as long as the exercise is free and fair as they adjudged the Abia re-run.

INEC returning officer had earlier the same Sunday announced that over 40,000 votes were cancelled due to electoral malpractice in most of the local government areas (LGAs). According to him, voting results from some wards were not declared and in other wards the number of votes cast was higher than the number of accredited voters.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Mao Ohuabunwa according to the results  won in four of the five LGAs. Orji Uzor Kalu, the Progressives Peoples Alliance candidate won only Bende local government where he amassed over 14,000 votes
against Ohuabunwa’s reported 5, 000. Kalu’s over 9, 000 vote lead in Bende significantly reduced Ohuabunwa`s over 10, 000 lead in the four local government areas he won. Kalu’s feat in Bende narrowed the final vote difference between him and Ohuabunwa to 195.

Final results as collated are as follows: PDP 26009; PPA 25814; APGA 13633; APC 916.
