BreakingNews 12/7/16: Nigeria may not field candidates for AU posts -Onyeama

[ Masterweb Reports: Abdullateef Salau reports ] - The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, has said that Nigeria may not be fielding candidates in the various vacant positions in the African Union. He spoke yesterday at a news conference on Nigeria’s preparation for the 2016 African Union Summit slated for next week for its 27th Ordinary Session to elect new members who will pilot its affairs for the next two years.

The summit themed: “African Year of Human Rights, with particular focus on Women’s Rights”, will hold from July 16 to 18, 2016 in Kigali, Rwanda.

According to the minister, Nigeria had planned to sponsor a candidate for the peace and security commission currently occupied by Algeria but withdrew following the country’s decision to retain its position.

Onyeama, however, stated that if the call for the postponement of the election till next year succeeds, Nigeria may take on the opportunity to field a candidate.
