BreakingNews 30/7/16 - UN suspends aid to Nigeria`s northeast after attack on convoy

[ Masterweb Reports: Judd-Leonard Okafor reports ] - The United Nations has temporarily suspended humanitarian assistance missions to the North-eastern parts of Nigeria after an attack on its convoy in Borno state.

One staff of UNICEF and a contractor with the International Office of Migration were wounded, UNICEF said in a statement.
Others including staff of UNFPA are safe.

Unknown assailants attacked the convoy as it travelled from Bama to Maiduguri after delivering humanitarian assistance.
"The convoy was in a remote area of northeastern Nigeria, where protracted conflict has caused extreme suffering and has triggered a severe malnutrition crisis," UNICEF said.

"This was not only an attack on humanitarian workers.  It is an attack on the people who most need the assistance and aid that these workers were bringing."

The UN will only lift the suspension after reviewing security situation on the area, said the statement.
