BreakingNews July 20 2013: Anambra Moves Against Flooding, AIDS

 [ Masterweb Reports ] – Governor Peter Obi said all necessary measures were being put in place to protect the State against adverse effects of flood this year. Governor Obi was speaking at an interactive session with stakeholders on flood at Alex Ekwueme Square Awka.


Governor Obi said all structures built on water channels were being demolished and blocked drainage reopened to ensure free flow of water to proper discharged point.


He warned the people to avoid dumping refuse in drainage system and other acts that abuse the environment to avoid the huge loss suffered by the State during last year’s flood.


The Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Oseloka Obaze disclosed that the State suffered twenty-six billion naira loss during the last years flood while the five hundred million interventions from the Federal Government has been transparently distributed to the affected communities.


At the same venue, Gov. Obi also announced that the State Government is to spend about one billion naira on procurement of HIV testing kits to be  distributed to all hospitals and health centres across the State. He lamented that the State has high prevalence of AIDS and HIV because previous administrations failed to make any approachable efforts to check the spread and assured that his administration will take proactive measures to reverse the trend.


The Governor warned that the State Government will soon commence demolition of all brothels and other centres that encourage prostitution urging the people not to discriminate against people living with HIV and AIDs, but to show them love and compassion.
