2013 Founders’ Fund Dinner Welcome address by the National President & Founder of ASA Women USA.

Dr (Mrs.) Anthonia Uche Umeh

Your Excellencies, Your Royal Highnesses, Honorable Commissioners, Members of Anambra State House of Assembly, Ambassadors, Distinguished Special Guests, Sponsors, Friends and well wishers of Anambra State, Fellow Anambrarians, Ladies and Gentlemen;

It is my great pleasure to welcome all of you on behalf of the Anambra State Association, Women in the USA (ASA Women USA) to the 2013 Founders’ Fund Dinner to launch their 400 Million Naira 60 bed Comprehensive Cancer Treatment Center in Anambra State University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka. This event is in collaboration with the Anambra State Government of Nigeria.  The theme of this event is “Together we hold the key to building a world class comprehensive cancer treatment center”

Over the years, the Anambra State Government, under HE, Governor Peter Obi have continuously supported our Maternal Health, Breast & Cervical Cancer Medical missions in 2009, 2010  & 2012  to Anambra State . Over Seventeen thousand women were seen by our physicians and about seven thousand of them received clinical breast examinations.  The Georgetown University Hospital, Washington DC, Breast Surgeons, Dr. Shawna Willey and Dr Bridget Oppong assisted by the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi (NAUTH) hospital team performed 27 biopsies, 5 mastectomies, 2 lumpectomies and 1 Breast Reconstruction, Secured two Mammography Machines, which were donated to Anambra State Government.

 The findings after numerous cancer medical missions to the state include:  local women die early from preventable breast and cervical cancer due to lack of appropriate diagnosis, limited access to care, deficiencies in technical manpower, and lack of infrastructure and underreporting.  Breast and Cervical cancers are claiming the lives of our mothers, aunts, sisters, wives and even our young girls in their prime. WHO projection estimates that by 2020 there will be 16 million new cases of cancers world-wide and 70 percent of them are to occur in developing countries like Nigeria.

 Based on the above challenges, ASA Women USA in collaboration with the Anambra State Government of Nigeria needs your support and participation at these 2013 Founders’ Fund Dinner. All proceeds go toward the construction of their 400 Million Naira comprehensive cancer treatment center within the State owned Teaching Hospital in Amaku, Awka, Anambra State. The goal of the proposed cancer center is to provide a full spectrum of cancer care including awareness and education; screening and diagnosis; access to treatment, support services, and scientific research. With a full functional cancer center in Anambra State, we hope to reduce the projections from the WHO to acceptable rates in developed countries.

To enable us do this launching, we have organized the 5K Walk for Hope 2013 in Maryland and in Houston USA, developed a detailed Project Plan for the Cancer Treatment Center in collaboration with Le Chez Consultants, Nigeria, received from the State owned teaching hospital, a land space for the construction of the center, and have mobilized the Diaspora including the President/CEO of BMG3 Enterprises, Gena Bradford, who will be assisting us with the grant solicitation funding, program and construction management of the cancer treatment center.

Tonight, we humbly request your sponsorship and partnership, so that we can together build the comprehensive cancer care center in the State. I strongly believe that all of you will answer our call. We assure you that your donations tonight will be judiciously and properly accounted for.

ASA Women USA will always be grateful to the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi for his support of ASA Women USA and for making great impact in the Anambra State Healthcare Systems including the accreditation of two hospitals, building of new teaching and general hospitals, renovating dilapidated hospitals, and equipping hospitals. Again, thank you for your support of ASA Women USA and your dedication to the health and progress of Anambra state.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude to the Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Hon. Dr. Lawrence Ikeako for collaborating with us at this noble mission. I thank the Fmr. CMD of NAUTH, Prof. Robinson Ofiaeli for his partnership with the organization throughout the years and Dr Dozie Ikedife, Ikenga Nnewi who motivated and inspired us with his “Beyond Medical Mission” keynote speech at the 2012 ASA Women USA Convention in Maryland. Special thanks to ASA Women USA Boards of Directors, Matrons, Trustees/ Patrons and the National Executive Council, for their hard work and dedication in bringing this event to fruition. I thank the Governing Council of Anambra State Associations-World-wide for their support. I want to thank my husband, Chief Celestine Umeh (Nwafenna Amichi) for his unending support. I also wish to express my deep thanks and appreciation to the husbands and partners of all our members, and their families for their support. Thank you for honoring our invitation and please enjoy the evening.
