BreakingNews 9/4/17: Nigeria to open up cattle routes, initiate pasture production

[ Masterweb Reports: Balarabe Alkassim reports ] - The Federal Government has set up plans to demarcate 6,000km cattle routes across the country to facilitate easy movement of cattle. It would also introduce commercial pasture production to provide enough food for the cattle to discourage long distance migrations by herders.

The National Coordinator, Grazing Stock Routes, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Alhaji Mahmud Bello, disclosed this in Bauchi on the sideline of a meeting with the leadership of herders and farmers at Mararaba Dajin, Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
He said the plan was to find ways of minimizing herders and farmers clash across the country through various measures including the introducing the herders to modern cattle rearing methods and fostering peace with farmers.
"We are going to provide 6,000 kilometers of cattle routes across the country; we are going to open the primary routes first, while the state and local governments are expected to launch the secondary routes.
"By the time we identify the primary stock routes, being frequently used, we will develop them. All the same, all the states may not have an equal share of the routes; Bauchi may have 200 kilometres and Plateau may have 50 kilometres but we are going to spread it,'' he said.
