BreakingNews 6/7/17 - Nigeria to publish names of looters

[ Masterweb Reports: Isiaka Wakili reports ] - The Federal Government has promised to disclose the identities of treasury looters. The Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, assured yesterday that this would be done at the appropriate time, "perhaps intermittently."

He was reacting to the ruling of a Lagos Federal High Court ordering the government to release information about the names of high ranking public officials from whom public funds were recovered and the circumstances under which funds were recovered as well as the exact amount of funds recovered from each public official."

Following a suit by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) against the government, Justice Hadiza Shagari had held that "the Federal Government has legally binding obligations to tell Nigerians the names of all suspected looters of the public treasury past and present."

Addressing State House reporters yesterday, Malami said: "Let me place it on the record that we have Freedom of Information Act in place. And the government is fully aware of its responsibility. But we have to take into account and consideration, the fact that there are some factors that have to be considered as far as making these disclosures is concerned.

"There are matters that are subjudice in court. There are matters of reconciliation, compilations and other associated things."
