BreakingNews 17/8/17 - 1 dead as IPOB clashes with police, army

[ Masterweb Reports: Emma Elekwa reports ] - One person was killed yesterday following a fracas between the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and security operatives in Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.

A planned visit of the leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, to the area in furtherance of his anti-election campaign in the state was said to have instigated the clash.

The security operatives made up of soldiers, police and other paramilitary agents had stormed the area as early as 8am in no fewer than 14 loaded trucks, a source said, explaining that trouble ensued when the Biafran flags, caps, shirts and other items being sold by some youths were seized and burnt by the security operatives.

"The situation angered the IPOB members and when they tried to attack the security operatives, the operatives tear gassed everybody and one of IPOB members was killed," the source added.

Reacting, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Nkeiruka Nwode, confirmed the presence of security operatives in the area but denied any death in the crisis.
