[ Masterweb Reports: Joshua Odeyemi reports ] - The Federal Government is considering the establishment of a National Guard to address emerging security threats in the country. Minister of Interior Abdulrahman Dambazau disclosed this yesterday in Abuja,ý when the Adjutant General of the California National Guard, United States of America paid him a courtesy visit.

The minister stressed that a lot of consultations would be done with all stakeholders before such decision was reached.

Dambazau explained that the National Guard would help to fill the gap between the operations of the Military and the Nigeria Police in tackling security challenges and emergencies.

He said the military was becoming increasingly involved in dealing with security threats, outside its constitutional mandate, while the Police might be overstretched in dealing withý such issues.

Dambazau said Nigeriaý will continue to collaborate with the International community, including sharing experiences with the U.S Army in the training of security personnel.

Earlier, the adjutant general, Maj.-Gen. David Baldwin said they were in Nigeria to foster partnership between both countries.

The General Ibrahim Babangida administration established a National Guard, which was disbanded by the administration of late General Sani Abacha.
