BreakingNews August 14, 2013 - Obi Unveils Unique Social Security Scheme - Provides Initial N1b for Indigent Non-Pensioners Aged Over 75

[ Masterweb Reports ] - Gov. Peter Obi yesterday unveiled the Unique Social Security Scheme for Anambra elders above 75 who do not have dependents and are not pensioners. Unveiling the programme yesterday at the Women Development Centre yesterday, the Governor said
the law setting up the programme,  Anambra State Indigent Relief Law was passed in June and signed into law in July and    that the initial 1 Billion Naira made available for the project covered from July, 2013 to December 2013. He said the State has a special account for the project in which his Government has provided enough money for the project till December, 2014. He said the aim was not to encumber the person coming after him.

Assuring the people of the State that his Government is hinged on sound planning, he said that necessary measures were put in place to enable his successor to take off seamlessly. Giving example with the buses he will provide to all the schools in Anambra by the end of the year, he said his successor would not have to think about that in the next four years. The same, according to him, goes for the computers and Internet subscription for two years, which will not encumber the in-coming Governor.

In fits of ecstasy, the Commissioner for Local Government, Mrs. Azuka Enemuo said that Anambra State had not had it so good. He said that before Governor Obi Anambra was a sorry site, but that today, Governor Obi, working with the fear of God had touched all sectors and parts of the State, building schools, roads, hospitals and other infrastructure among people that lacked them before him. "One of the things that enthuses me about the Governor is his inconspicuous approach to his work, always working not to attract the applause of the people, but doing the right things at all times", the Commissioner said.

In her own remarks, the Coordinator of the project and the Special Adviser to the Governor said the event was first of its kind in Nigeria and encapsulated the Igbo people's  credo of being once brother's keeper. He said that those being assisted were those that did not have people assisting him. Some of them, she said, did not have children and people to care for them.

On how the beneficiaries where chosen, she said it was with the involvement of relevant stakeholders, including President Generals or his representative, Woman Leaders or his representative,  and village Chairmen or their representative  in the State forming Community Screening Committee as contained in Section 4 of the law setting the project- Anambra State.

She said the project was meant to take care of those without any form of support, either from their successful children  of from  pensions. She warned against abuse of the project, citing the law setting it up, section 7  as prescribing N50,000 fine and or  6 years imprisonment for defaulters, including those who claim to be over 75 years and those venturing false information.

Speaking, the Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Chukwuemeka Ike said the decision of the Governor to embark on the revolutionary assistance to the elderly not only showed him as a good father, but also a visionary. He appealed to those in charge of the project to have the fear of God and humbling spirit to render services to the elderly without let or hindrance.
