BreakingNews 30/8/17 - Senator wants template on what constitutes hate speech

[ Masterweb Reports: Maureen Onochie reports ] - Senator Shehu Sani representing Kaduna Central Senatorial district has stressed the need to have a template on what constitutes hate speech in order for the security agencies and Nigerians to take note.

Speaking yesterday in Abuja when he visited the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Sani said he was not in support of the use of hate speech but "the military or the police have no business monitoring and arresting people for posting information on the social media."

He said people in position of power should realize that Nigeria was a democratic country which allows right to freedom of expression.

In her response, the Acting Executive Secretary of the Commission, Mrs. Oti Ovrawah said the commission issued an advisory preparatory to the 2015 general election to curb cases of hate speech and since then has been working to see that the various cases of hate speech and electoral violence are addressed.
