BreakingNews 23/7/17 - Mother, 2-week-old baby survive as flood wreck havoc in Onitsha

Masterweb Reports: Emma Elekwa reports ] - A woman and her two-week-old baby has escaped unhurt when flood wrecked havoc in Onitsha, the commercial city of Anambra state and environs, following a heavy torrential downpour in the area.


Daily Trust gathered that the rain which lasted for about two hours yesterday, pushed down fences and destroyed documents and property worth thousands of Naira.


The victim, Ngozika Ibe, who resides in Dumumudu street, Odoakpu, said she had to hand over her tender baby to neighbours residing upstairs to enable her scoop the water which had already submerged her apartment.


According to the woman, her property such as mattresses, cooking utensils and certificates were floating on the flood which was already at above-knee level till about 2 am.


She blamed the disaster on indiscriminate dumping of waste by residents, stressing the need for proper disposal of refuse to forestall future occurrences.


Another victim, Ikenna Ogbaji, described the rain as the highest in the area in the past five years, attributing it to blockage of drainage channels.


He advocated imprisonment for anyone caught dumping refuse into drainage channels.


On her part, Mrs. Hope Ogah, a petty trader, revealed that the flood carried away the wares she bought recently, soliciting government's assistance to enable them start afresh.
