*Nigeria: NCAA Issues Advisory Warning To Pilots
By Lateef Lawal
Pilots flying within and into the Nigerian airspace have been warned to be aware of the dangers posed by harmattan haze in the country between the months of November and March. The warning/alert was issued by the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority(NCAA), Dr Harold Demuren in an advisory circular number AC/NCAA-Aeromet-08 sent to all pilots and airline operators.
The advisory alert included the following likely harmattan hazards and operational problems:
*Heavy fog resulting in reduced air-to-ground visibility.
*Aerodrome visibility may fall below the prescribed minimal and in severe conditions, dust haze may blot out runways and markers, over wide areas, making visual navigation impossible.
*And lastly - where terminal visibility falls below the prescribed weather minimal, flights are bound to be delayed, diverted or canceled.

It therefore advised pilots to recognize harmattan as hazardous to aviation and exercise maximum restraint when the condition is observed or forecast. To further enhance safety during this period, pilots have been mandated to obtain adequate departure, en-route and destination weather information and briefing from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency(NIMET) prior to any flight operations.
