The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency(NAMA) has taken delivery of three containerized Instrument Landing System(ILS), Distance Measuring Equipment(DME) and Very High Omni-Directional Radio Range for installation in Katsina and Enugu Airports. The navigational instruments are part of the equipments ordered to be installed in the airports by the Chairman of the NAMA Board, Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje in June, 2009 as part of the Safer Skies Policy of President Alhaji Umaru Yar'Adua. NAMA has taken delivery of the equipments from the contractor, Thales ATM France at its headquarters following their clearance from the Apapa Port in Lagos over the weekend. ( Continues below..... )

The navigational equipments were part of the safety gadgets ordered for some major airports in the country in order to further boost the air safety and restore pilots' and the travelling public's confidence in the country's airspace. According to official sources, ILS and DME would be installed at Katsina Airport while VOR and DME installed at Enugu Airport. As at the time of this report, arrangements were being made by the management of NAMA to move these equipments to their respective sites for prompt installation after ascertaining the structural integrity of where they are to be installed.

In related development, safe-sky equipments and spare parts are in due course scheduled for installation at airport/en-route stations of Kwazero and Gboko. The Chairman of NAMA Board during a recent visit to Benin facilities directed that the unserviced ILS at the airport should be serviced in two weeks to enhance navigation in that sector of the country's airspace
