*Is Nigeria in an interregnum?

By Frank Ediagbonya

With series of speculations surrounding the health of President Yar'Adua, PDP constitution and threats to succession of the Presidency by some unconstituted individuals, the political and economic prospect of Nigeria has been cast into serious doubt and uncertainty. With many Nigerians kept in the dark concerning the Man who is navigating the ship of their destiny, the little hope left for struggling Nigerians has become increasingly unpredictable. Is Nigeria in an interregnum as we speak? Is PDP playing pranks with Nigerians as they did to them during third term agenda? Is Nigeria under the rule of a Regent?

The theory that the President of Nigeria must come from the North at this particular time of global consciousness and computer age has cast shadows on the memory of many Nigerians who are lost in the middle of nowhere. The only way to find out is to test these theories, if it has empirical adequacy or not.

1. President Yar'Adua is being forced by a cabal in the north to continue as the president of Nigeria under heavy stress of his health, which has affected his performance ratings as well as the political and economic wellbeing of Nigeria.

2. The rumours that the Vice President would resign if the president resigned due to ill-health or that the VP has already written an open resignation letter (undated) in case of any eventuality, confirms the empirical adequacy that some people are toying with the future of millions of Nigeria for their own selfish gain.

3. The suggestions that PDP constitution overrides the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in case of any eventuality of the President, is a confirmation that divide and rule system as used by the colonial masters has been remodeled by some oppressive political imperialists in the ruling party who are colonizing millions of Nigerians against their will and their choices.

4. The speculation in most national newspapers that some political juggernauts in the North are gearing up to succeed Yar'Adua should he resign due to ill-health is a proof of another confirmed empirical adequacy that Nigerians are being ordered and reordered to follow imposed constitution of the ruling party instead of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It also suggests that tribal politics is the bone marrow of the ruling party. ( Continues below..... )

Map of Nigeria

The political tension in Nigeria could take a new turn for the worse, if the few who order the lives of millions of Nigerians around refuse to grow up and realise that Nigerians are more informed today than what they were 27 years ago.

There are many reasons why Nigerians are kept in the dark beside the empirical adequacy identified above. Some people are apprehensive of losing their jobs if the president resigns and therefore they think they could save more time if they continue to dribble Nigerians by postponing the news which we all know already.

Nigerians have the constitutional and moral rights to know about the well being of their leaders if Nigeria is a country where election counts. If this is the case, the ruling party would be been under enormous pressure and worry of losing the next general elections. There are indications that Nigeria is not well organized constitutionally, structurally and politically if the empirical adequacy highlighted above is to be taken very seriously.

President Yar'Adua should not be subjected to pressure of any kind by any group that want to be kept happy while millions of Nigerians suffer. The need to review the Nigerian constitution, political/social structures, internal party politics and constitution can not be overemphasized. Nigeria is greater than any individual or party, therefore the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria should be our ultimate guide to sustaining ONE Nigeria.
