Abdul Mudallad (aka Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab), the 23-year-old Nigerian national charged with trying to blow up a U.S. airliner told the FBI that more bombers were on their way to target the U.S. This revelation has triggered alarm bell among U.S. intelligence and Homeland Security. In his words according to ABC News report, Mudallad told the FBI that “there were more just like him in Yemen and would strike soon.”

A tape released by al Qaeda in Yemen four days before Mudallad's failed attempt, read: “we are carrying bomb to hit the enemies of god.” The group, known as Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, is the latest reincarnation of Islamic militant cells that have been active in Yemen for years. Yemen Islamic militants have supplied extremists to wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and to terrorist networks stretching from Africa to Europe. ( Continues below….. )

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has claimed responsibility for the attempted bombing of Northwest Airlines flight 253. According to a Yemeni terrorism expert, the group has roughly 2,000 members and sympathizers exploiting Yemen's economic and political chaos to creating a base for jihad at the edge of the Persian Gulf.

Abdul Mudallad on Christmas day was subdued and prevented from blowing up a U.S. airliner by fellow passengers and the flight crew. Mudallad left Lagos, Nigeria on Christmas eve to the Netherlands where the next day in Amsterdam he boarded Northwest Airlines flight 253 bound for Detroit, Michigan, U.S. He was traveling one way, without a return ticket. The flight had 278 passengers aboard.

Twenty minutes prior to landing in Detroit, the cabin erupted with firecracker sounding explosion followed with smoke smell. A passenger climbed over others to confront the suspect while other passengers and flight crew rushed to assist him. The suspect was subdued with his hands, pants and legs burnt from the explosion. He was taken to the burn unit of the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, 20 miles from the airport. A U.S. intelligence official said the explosive device was a mixture of powder and liquid that failed when the suspect tried to detonate it.

The explosive powder has been identified as PETN – pentaerythritol tetranitrate, which was concealed in the suspect's underwear. According to reports, Mudallad told the FBI that he was trained for months in Yemen, given 80 grams of the explosive sewn into his underwear for activation in a U.S. bound plane.
