Twenty modern hand-held metal detectors have been donated to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria(FAAN) to boost security at all the airports in the country. The gadgets were donated on behalf of Rapiscan(a European security products manufacturer) by Scope Center, its sole agent in Nigeria. Making the donation, a representative of Scope Center, Mr Adebayo Babatunde noted that his company was willing to assist in improvement of security services at the nation's airports with the aim of improving passenger screening. Babatunde speaking to reporters said the metal detectors were the latest model in the market and assured it was capable of detecting any metal concealed in any part of the human body.
It would also help to increase the alertness of FAAN security operatives at the screening points at both local and international airports, he added. The Managing Director of FAAN, Mr. Richard Aisuebeogun while receiving the donation expressed appreciation for the initiative taken by Scope Center in partnering with the Authority to tackle security challenges at the nation's airports, particularly in the face of the evolving security challenges worldwide. Aisuebeogun promised to deploy the detectors to all the airports immediately to form part of the layers of security being put in place by FAAN in view of the security breach involving a Detroit bound flight on 25 December, 2009. He noted that such Public-Private Partnership would help the nation in moving forward in the aviation sector which required huge capital outlay.
The Federal Government he said recently acquired some sensitive equipments needed at the airports such as X-Ray screening machines and walk-through metal detectors that would form layers of security measures to boost security of life and property.
