*Governor Daniel’s Aide Went Berserk, Beat Passenger On Board IRS Flight

*Culprits will be prosecuted, says NCAA

*Case reported to Police

There was dramatic scene Wednesday, March 10, when one of the aides of Governor Gbenga Daniel of Ogun State, Nigeria allegedly beat a passenger on board an IRS flight at the Lagos airport. In retaliation, some passengers on board the flight pounced on the governor’s aide and dealt with him severely.

The passengers, who proved uncontrollable at the terminal, told reporters that they would fight the case with their last sip of blood, since the manhandled passenger did not commit any offense that warranted the assault.

One of the passengers narrated that their flight which took off from Abuja airport for Lagos, but could not land at Lagos domestic terminal due to unfavourable weather. She said the plane returned to base in Abuja after it hovered for some minutes in Lagos airspace.

She stated that as they prepared to return to Lagos with passengers taking their seats, one of the passengers who had business class ticket went to take his seat at the business class area when one of the aides of the governor told him to vacate the seat, saying it was reserved for the Governor.

The passenger, it was learnt explained that he also bought the same business class seat and could seat anywhere in business area. The aide allegedly told him to vacate the area for the governor and his entourage, a situation which caused a ‘brouhaha’ from take-off to landing.

STOPPED When Governor Daniel eventually came on board, his aides allegedly dragged the passenger out of the business area which he had paid for and was forced him to sit in the economy area. After the aircraft landed, it was gathered that the passenger was dragged out of the aircraft and beaten, a situation which attracted the attention of security officers attached to MMA2.

At the MMA2, the Chief Security Officer and ADC attached to Daniel were seen telling the security officers that the passenger “embarrassed the governor on board and should suffer the consequence". “I am the Chief Security Officer of the governor, we are not dragging this case because of anything, but for the embarrassment he caused the governor", the Chief Security Officer told the police officers. ( Continues below….. )

Airborne Plane

The aides, who accused the passenger of calling the governor “stupid", eventually took the case to the Beesam police station when it appeared the security officers could not do anything. Another passenger, who accused the officials of the airline onboard of refusing to intervene, said he had to go into the cockpit to talk to the Pilot to intervene when the issue became very serious. “We need to tell the whole world that we all have equal right anywhere, both on air and on ground”, he stressed.

However, Benedict Ifeanyi, Murtala Muhammed Airport police public relations officer told reporters that the case had been transferred to the Deputy Commissioner of Police at the international airport adding that he received the report yesterday.

Spokesman for the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) Sam Adurogboye said the matter was yet to be reported to the authority, but described the incident as air rage that was capable of leading to accident. He described the situation as horrendous and against all international aviation law, stressing that the culprits could be prosecuted for endangering passengers’ lives.

Its really unfortunate that it is the thugs and corrupt leaders that has taken over leadership in Nigeria. This is due to the fact that the leaders are 'selected' rather than being 'elected' by the people. It is only M.K.O. Abiola's election that was real, ever since then free and fair election has eluded Nigerians. Hence, this "air rage" is one of the bye-products of "Selection". I'm really glad that Nigerians rose up to the occasion by collectively defending the "oppressed". Its high time Nigerians wake up to rescue Nigerian Citizens from "Rogues and Thugs" that has taken over Politics in the last ten years. Enough of "Road or Air Rage" that risks the lives of others.

The aide to the Governor should realise that he is an "Ambassador" for the State . "To whom much is given, much is expected". I am sure the Governor did not ask him to engage in a bruhaha in the public. This is one of the problem that the country has with law enforcement agencies; they tend to feel above the law. If the passenger had commited an offence, the court of law is there to adjudicate rather than taking the law into his hand thereby commited a battery in the public. In the alternative, he could have reported the incident to the flight crew and have it resolved amicably. Mere hearing or reading about it in a newspaper is a VERY BAD PUBLICITY for Ogun State and the Governor in particular. I am from Ogun State and will hate to see the good name of the State being dragged into the mud. And this is what am thinking.

Things are happening. Where was the Governor Gbenga when this Air Rage was going on? If, this type of thing is happening in this twenty first century, then we really have ourselves to examin. How could a sitting Governor allow this to happen? Himself and His aid should know that, they are not more important than anybody. Infact they ought to respect the other passengers more because, they paid for their ticket with their hard earned money while, He, the Governor and His so called Aides should realise that, they took that flight on tax payers money. They should learn to respect the people they govern. They are the ones that travels overseas all the time. Is that how Governors behave in those places they travel to? Is that what they learn from those countries? Too bad. I advice that man to head the court without delay.

The other time, it was Admiral Arogundade's security officers brutally assaulting a defenseless lady in a Lagos street. This time, it is the controversial and uncouth Gov. Gbenga Daniel and aides oppressing a fellow citizen in a public airliner. In decent nations of the world, public officials cheerefully ride with the masses in any form of public transportation without any form of harrassment. In Nigeria, the reverse is the case where (se)elected officials use their ill-gotten position and wealth to intimidate innocent citizens. Gbenga Daniel should have flown his private jet or chartered aircraft as is the practice of our theiving politicians, if he did not want to sit near a "common" citizen. This matter should not be swept under the carpet like the previous similar cases. Gbenga Daniel should be made a scape-goat in order to serve as a deterrent to his fellow mindless politicians at all levels. Enough of this insanity in Nigeria!

Unless the International communities at large intervene with what Nigerian state governors do to civilians,
it may not be long before "suicide bombers" start roaming public places to restore honor and personal dignities
or to some great extends, start attacking families of the elites. Few days ago, a Nigerian judge attacked a man
in public, beat him up, and tried to force the man into the trunk of his vehicle in public. That judge was temporarily suspended by the Nigerian Judicial Council for public fighting which effectively was a common assault and attempted adoption. Last month, it was also reported that the Gov. Ikedi Ohakim of Imo state sent his security to adopt a civilian who had written several articles against the governor in the media. The victim was allegedly stripped naked, and lashed with a whip by the Governor in his government residence. Today, an air passenger was reported beaten up by the security officers of Ogun Gov. Gbenga Daniels in the plane for no apparent reason other than for refusing to forfit his Business class seat for the governor's aides.

These incursions are serious stomps on individual rights, personal egos, and civil liberties. Indeed, there might
some elements of the public community that might not take these assaults very lightly. Some people might take
personal revenge on innocent family members of those concerned or pad themselves up as suicide bombers and
prefer to die with their assailants. When aggrieved people have been denied all mechanisms of redress set up
for public reconciliations, they may become desperate and despondence and commit serious mischiefs. Ordinary
by-stander may be enraged by a maltreatment that is disposed to any citizen he or she may not even know. We
must also recollect how the late prime ministers of India ( ie. Indira Ghandi and her son died at the hands of those grossly offended by the policy decisions affecting the Indian Golden Amistry's Temple, in India). Brutality
by the elites is becoming too rampart and very serious against the common citizens who had virtually nothing.
Unless these issues are properly checked-mated, Nigerian elites may be inviting enormous trouble they might
not be well-equipped to manage when fully developed to class wars. For peace to prevail, let all concerned speak
up now before it is too late to invoke God's help. Fair is fair.

These type of behavior by public official just goes to show the type of society that we are. Individually and collectively, our public officials are the ones who have created the unpleasant conditions in Nigeria today - armed robbery, corruption, rebellion, etc. When are they going to learn? Most of them go to churches and mosques regularly and yet...

If these were to be the way Nigerians was since inception, I think the likes of gorvernor Gbenger Daniel and the other governors could live talkless of being selected as governors or whom they' re to govern. As the number one citizen of
Ogun state, the entire people of Ogun state should rise to retore their respect because it's a disgrace to person like Gbenger and a slap to Ogun state citizens in general. It has shown a very good example of Ogun state citizens who always fails to conduct themselves even in public. We should wait to see the reaction of Ogun people over the emblassment their Governor and aids caused them. These will serve as warning onto all selected or furtunate imposters that are occupying verious seats in other governments high offices in Nigeria. Over the years Nigeria had sufferred bad governance, which had ternished her image abroad. We all collectively should rise to restore senity onto Nigerian governance.

Should it be news that Nigeria is a write off? That i came home and the idiot who reprogrammed the weighting machine to agree with his unscrupulous idiocy thinking he could intimidate me into paying him extra for my luggage when the lady at the cheking in counter told me i have 11 additional pounds if i want to buy more stuff and carry with me to the US...he related by phone to the guy at the gate to stop me and make it difficult for me to get on board..i had to be strip searched and even underwent X-ray in the guise that I was carrying something on me just because i refused to cooperate. finally no money came from me and they did not find anything cos i conducted myself civilly which frustrated their plan. The guy wears white top and black pants always standing toward the right on international entry gate(departure) Abuja ...you guys be ware. I just read as well of same issue where a guy was beaten almost to death for defending his rights. A country where anything goes and no respect for human rights. they should impeach the idiot from power for allowing such to happen in his presence.

Why will it not happen when in Nigeria even the president himself don't care about people he suppose to care for. I remember one time I boarded Aero contractor plane from lagos to warri. After checking in our luggauges and about to take off. We were told that we can not take off because Obasanjo's plane is on ground. And many other planes are hovering around to land but they could not. No body cares if those plane on air have enough fuel or not. At the end of the day our pilot said he will not be able to continue the journey to Warri because it was getting dark. The worst of it all was Aero off loaded our luggauges and don't even care whether some of us have a place to stay in Lagos at that time.
Watch out for this case they will use tax payer's money to turn the case against this passenger.

It is a pity that this type of barbaric behavior with in Nigeria law enforcers is yet to be eradicated. Collecting bribes and extra judicial killings is the norm. Could someone in the law enforcing chain of command explain to their subordinates what is tort and battery. The governor could have called his men to order; after all, the assaulted passenger has the right to be in business class because he has already paid for it. The airline official is the only one that can tell the passenger to move to some where else in the plane. My advise to this passenger is to get a good lawyer and sue the CSO , THE AIRLINES AND MOST LIKELY THE GOVERNOR

Odutola,I quite disagree with your view,we all have equal right here and I think it's high time we all wake up from our old mentality. the man in question has a bussiness class ticket which gives him the right to sit anywhere in the business class area cos the governor's name was not inscribed on a particular seat. If that was done,he wouldn't have attemted to seat there in the first place.
However,if Gbenga daniel feel he cannot seat close to a fellow citizen cos of the ego of being a governor, then he should have chatered a flight from their loots from the tax payers money.
It his high time we put a stop to this unending public assault and harrasment form the people in government office. The passenger should get a good lawyer who can defend him and let justice prevail. God bless Nija

Nigeria, the place God promised that it will be a place of refuge, were people can stay and be saved, so many of
us will not be suprise of what our leaders are turning this country into,. The pasenger bought the ticket with his
own money, so, he deserve every respect. The Daniel in question as a governor should prove to the world that
he is a responsible governor and a father of the state. If I was on board with the so called governor and his aides,
I would have handed over the aides to God, I know is not late, because whatever a man sows, he reaps. The
pasenger may be humiliated, but I know the God we serve, will always vindicate the pasenger and prove to the
world that He (God) still fight for the defenceless. PLEASE NIGERIANS LET US RETURN BACK TO GOD IN SPIRIT &

Issues like this is difficulty to judge or advise. Let say the fact. What the man did was wrong in totality. Whether Aide or Gbenga Daniel, they are our Leader. Any man who does not want war will prepare to negotiate. From your own point of view, the Passenger could be right. Reflect on what God says: "your ways and thoughts are not God's ways/thoughts. God made them to be our Leaders and nobody gets to that position without HIM.

In advance countries, respect is reciprocal, the Leaders respect their people and PEOPLE of respect their Leaders. Food for thought.

Are you saying that bcos your children have constitutional equal rights like you, then they can disrespect you.

My thinking is that, whichever right you have, you need not exercise that right at that moment. Why are you dragging the seats with GOVERNOR of a STATE. You can as well slap PRESIDENT on the pretends of equal right.

M opinion is that the fighting should have directed to the Airline Officers on board, knowing fully that the Aide has roped his argument on GOVERNOR's SECURITY.

Ayansoga Odutola, your sense of reasoning is strange. I shall not comment on your claim of being a lecturer but shall only ask that you please use the privileges of your office to give your students a slap each if they come late to lectures. I urge you to try it and you will most definitely rue the day you ever contemplated the act. You without a doubt know that you would never get past the first attempt and would have to go to a plastic surgeon for a rearrangement of your face. Mr. Daniel during his campaign for the governorship position of his state declared and pledged that if elected he would be in the government house to SERVE the people. Therefore he is a servant of the people and not their master. Why on earth should anybody state that the opportunity to serve the people which is purely a privilege handed to him by the people is a license to harrass and intimidate others. What on earth is wrong with someone sitting next to a governor on a plane or anywhere else. And would the heavens fall if a governor was to sit in the economy section of a plane if that was where there was an available seat. In a country where too many people would not be able to afford the standing section of a plane if there was one a governor sits quietly and watches a fellow man like him being tossed about like a rag by his security operatives. A word from him would have stopped the melee before it even started. I am not impressed with this governor. I am sure the passenger that was beaten up knows what to do and I hope he will do it to ensure that such humiliating treatment is not ever meted out to anyone else again in Nigeria. If this happened between a black person and a white man we would scream racism - remember Rosa Parks who refused to give up her seat on the bus because she was black? Now what do we call this? There is absolutely no justification for this abuse of office. On a personal note, I as a human being would never ever have gone to the economy class to sit down after having bought a business class ticket. No I would not. Most certainly not on account of vacating the seat for a governor. I would rather vacate a seat anytime for anyone who spoke to me with respect appealing to my sense of understanding and explaining why he had to be on that particular flight at that particular time. Governor Daniel should be held liable for all that his guards did because as we all know he who pays the piper dictates the tune.

I have been crying since I've been going through the views of Ayansoga Odutola and I've also been wondering what he will be telling his students in terms of human right. Soga, you are talking of 2.00 and 5.50pm, my brother, that does not give the animals around the Gov. to carry out such obnoxious action. Their are some political undertones in your views, if people like Gani Fawehinmi were still alive, you would have found yourself and those beasts around the Gov. at the court of Law. I advise you tender an appology to the oppressed person and keep quiet, please.

IRS Airline quickly look out for this customer and apologies to he/she as you failed in your responsibility to protect him on board.
As for the Governor's Thugs they should be made to face the law to let them know that Nigeria belong to all of us.
To the brave passengers who waded into the matter. Bravo!! struggle must continue.

here in the u.s,you can board a plane with anybody and sit near anyone, irrespective of their status. When the governor was campaigning,he could sit anywhere with anybody or rather he could allow anyone to sit on his lap,but now he is the governor with security parameter around him.Infact if the governor had stood up to sit in the economy and allowed the man the sit wher he wants, imagine what would be going on in the man's head and the how people would see the governor. But what i don't understand is whether the governor heard them fighting or not.

Look gentle men i do understand your argument, but come to think of this matter critically, the airline authority should be blame for everything. the airline authority did not do their job well, they KNOW THE NUMBER OF SEATS IN THE BUSINESS CLASS AND ECONOMY CLASS, so why not sell their seat according to the numbers and number each ticket for each passenger seat to avoid the type of confussion thy created. If the number of seats available are sold, then they stop selling their tickets for the flight. If they have 100 seats and sold 100 tickets there would'nt be this type of confussion. probably they over sold their tickets and the passengers were more than the seats in the business class. To my mind the airline authority should be held responsible for what ever happened. This type of conffussion can never happen in international airline arrangement. Nigeria still have a long way to go if, we can not arrange local air travel. The GOVERNOR also should be blame, he is the servant of the people. He should have settled that matter before departing from the aircraft for his other assignment for his people.

What has happened is simply one instance of further confirmation of lawlessness and insecurity in Nigeria. Consequently, people have left for abroad in seacrch of peacefull living; some delightfully venture into the acts for profitability while others speak out only when ithey are affected.

Prof Ayansoga Odutola is simply testing his ability to philosophize. Interesting arguements but baseless and inhumane. By 2:00pm and 5:50pm visa-vis non landing of the airline implies unexecuted contract;hence somewhat delayed flight for the 2:00pm. This makes the passenger right to be on-board at the fateful hours.

The Aides went doing the job of the Airline and has done it wrongly. He could be charged for impersonation as well. Very dissappointing that the passanger was beaten in presence of the Governor.

I have studied and still studying Nature and its laws. An exciting way of nature is that it respects nobody. On that fateful day, it was the passenger's turn to be assulted; someday Ayansoga Odutola, you or me may be the next to be dehumanized.

I am totally disappointed about everthing, however, I thought the Airline would
have sorted out the matter from the start. Since the first flight couldn't land
successfully at its destination, and was turned back to its original departure
terminal, this is very simple, the management would have made another flight
available to convey both afternoon and evening passengers to save this urgly
situation. and seat number would have been allocated to every passenger.

On the whole, I strongly blame the staff of the Airline and the Governor for not
putting the situation under control, this shows that His Excellency was
negligent and somebody of his calibre has no charisma to govern a state that
comprises millions population, since he was not able to manage one or two
people, even to conduct himself humbly was a fiasco. and it is unacceptable in
a civilized society, my opinion is to impeach him from the office.

I have read all the comments on my view and i noticed that something is missing.

My line of argment is that, asuming that the Governor was wrong, what of the Airline (Business is business).

All 'am saying is that, we should learn how to respect our Country/Leader. No matter the extent of the offence. We should be seeing as patrotic Citizens, that say positive things about our Country. Am not saying what the Governor/Aide did was right, but good comments should come from our mouth.

It is only in Nigeria we do don't say GOD BLESS our COUNTRY.

One Nigerian was killed in Swiss, no bad comments against this Country.

Please let us pray for this OUR Country and the Leaders.

Quite frankly, what has happened is typically Nigerian. The present crop of 'leaders' are mostly thugs who got into position of leadership by riding roughshod on the will of the people. Ogun state, never mind what their posturings are, is the state of 'do-or-die' politics and has been so ever since Gbenga Daniel shot his way to power like a soldier in the 2007 'gulf war' which Iwu imagines were elections. In the circumstance, beating up an air passenger is just a minor exercise for his troops.

Frankly speaking, if I were a passenger in that flight, I would have rained unprintable abuses on Gbenga and his thugs referred to as aides. His chief Protocol officer should have diffused the tension by pleading with the passenger
to accord the governor that honour of the business class. Though this problem is as a result of the incompetence of the airline cabin crew and their check in counter clerks, nevertheless the behavior of the Governor's thugs fell short of good conduct which is supposed to be their trademark. The Governor might be
unhappy with the brutal actions of his thugs, yet he did little to stem their excessive use of force to achieve their aim. Better to do nothing than to do ill.
it is wrong to blow one's top at the expense of civility and this incident is a minus for Gbenga who is noted for several polluted controversies. Enough is enough.

I wish to use this medium to advise Professor Ayansoga Odutola to resign from his folly and apply for a job as a bouncer to the Governor. He will readily be employed so that he will desist from teaching our unfortunate students "nonsense" apology to Fela. He should not allow his membership
of a cult group to mislead him to be on a sticky wicket. Replying his critics
is a mark of improper upbringing and arrogance and may affect his chances
of not being a dead duck.

If he is going to fly on a commercial plane then he needs to sit with the people and not beat them. If he bought all the seats fine sit alone otherwise he needs to be removed from office. The beating of a man for sitting in a seat is cause enough to remove him.
