Aviation stakeholders say Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) should roll out policies that will bring the airlines together. They said strong and strict regulation was the only way to make airline operators in the country cooperate and merge to reap the rewards of the airline business.
The stakeholders stated this at the 5th Safety, Security and Service Summit in Lagos. One of the stakeholders, Mr. Gbenga Olowo said if the Industry was to move forward, what was done in the banking sector should be applied to the aviation sector. ( Continues below….. )
He noted that the era of one man, one airline would not salvage the financial quagmire the operators are currently facing; adding that safety of passengers would be endangered if urgent steps were not taken. Citing mega carriers of the world who had merged to form a formidable force in competing with others, he said their example had shown that there are great benefits in cooperation.
The airlines Mr. Olowo said include, Delta Airlines, Northwest, United, Continental, Air France, KLM Royal Dutch, British Airways and Iberia. ( Continues below..... )

Another stakeholder, Mr. Sam Akerele emphasized that if the operators were confused as to how to come together, the regulatory agency should take up the bull by the horn and decide the better way for them to avoid going into extinct.
He however noted that the Federal Government must also be willing to assist by creating the enabling environment, granting waivers for the importation of aircraft parts and giving soft loans to carriers. The stakeholders therefore called on the regulatory agency to monitor its sister agencies to ensure that the operators are not driven out of business with unnecessary charges.
