*Nigeria: The Boko Haram Question

By Kali Gwegwe

It is not surprising that the Boko Haram question is fast gaining space in Nigeria. For a country that has almost been ruined by poor leadership in the political, cultural, economic, and religious sectors; the emergence of the Boko Haram sect is only a positive reminder that God loves Nigeria. With the pitiable depth Nigeria has sunk to in the last fifty years, many outside the shores of the country had thought that the world’s most populous black nation would have been dead and buried in the backyard of African history. Nigerians should therefore thank God before worrying about the menace of Boko Haram.

Over the last few months, many commentators have made the grave mistake of putting the Niger Delta crisis in the same basket with the Boko Haram question. Others have placed Boko Haram in the same cage with the Odua and Biafra agendas. They are not in any way birds of the same feather. ( Continues below...... )

Late Boko Haram Leader

History has shown that political, social, and economic ideologies built on the foundation of religion is usually very complex and difficult to manage. This is due to the important place of God in the affairs of men and societies. It has therefore been easy for people and organizations to hide behind the banner of religion to promote their individual and collective beliefs. Even when some of these beliefs are doubtful or unpalatable, fear of the wrath of the unseen God- and not necessarily threats of violence weakens the resolve to put up open resistance. This, coupled with high quality propaganda has earned many radical Islamic organizations such as Al Qaeda the sympathy of many Muslim faithfuls.

In analyzing the Boko Haram question, one fundamental issue must be fully digested. Every religion has a unique way of responding to different issues involving God. For instance; Christians will gladly wait for God to avenge those that desecrate His name, nature, or eminence. Some Muslim sects will not. They will rather stand up to physically defend the name, nature, and eminence of Allah. This is the foundation of Islamic radicalism or fundamentalism. Unfortunately, several western countries like Britain and the United States have refused to accept this bare reality. The result is a steady increase in terrorist activities all over the world. In their own folly, Washington and London have responded with the use of extreme force against militant organisations at home and abroad. ( Continues below..... )

Despite the astronomical amount of human and financial resources deployed in the last twenty years to combat religious radicalism as represented by Al Qaeda and sister organisations, very little have been achieved. This is one simple reason why I strongly endorse President Goodluck Jonathan’s decision to bring the leadership of the Boko Haram sect to a round table. This should not be seen as weakness on the part of the federal government. President Jonathan should not for any reason repeat the mistakes of the two Bush presidencies in the United States. They undermined the complexities and spiritual strength of Islamic fundamentalists. We are all sad witnesses to how wrong Washington was.

With superior arguments, the Boko Haram sect will disengage. This argument will however not be done with threats, guns and tanks. In 2009, the Nigerian federal government appropriated about N400b to equip the military to extinguish militancy in the Niger Delta region but failed woefully. What the military succeeded in achieving was the demolition of several coastline communities. They also won the prize of killing thousands of innocent women and children. ( Continues below..... )

Mohammed Yusuf's bullet-ridden body

Photo Above: Mohammed Yusuf's bullet-ridden body shown to journalists in a video hours on July 30, 2009 after Nigerian police announced they had captured him alive. Police said Yusuf was shot while trying to escape.

With all of these in mind, the federal government will need to invest enough political will and diverse resources to make the Boko Haram leadership appreciate the truth about the mechanism of globalization. They need to be told that our failing value system- not western education is responsible for the sordid state we have found ourselves. A whole lot of intellectual capacity will be required to achieve this dream.

I am not aware that western education encourages government officials to ignore the interests of the wider society and protect their private interests alone. Western education does not teach corruption. It does not also promote sexual promiscuity. No doubt, the concerns raised by Boko Haram are tenable. The problem is how to address them. This should be a challenge to all political, economic, cultural, and religious leaders in Nigeria. We cannot sit back and allow our values to be rubbished by the greed and strength of a few heeled persons in the society.

DominicI disagree with the notion that any group that seek to compel others to follow their thoughts deserve such dialogue. Democracy entails that each person is entitled to his view within the context of the governing law. If they detest western education, they are entitled to their opinion, and may have the right to persuade others to see their point of view. To compel others by force amounts to tyranny. This acts offends our sense of common decency. The bombings are act of terror and must be dealt with accordingly.

Comment from: Kola Richard [Visitor]
Kola RichardYou made good points in this article and I quite agree ware with you. What we are reaping is what our leaders sown in neglecting people they were suppose to take care of. The money that they could have spent to give these people good education was stolen to build local empires and to maintain their harem of wives and concubines. How do you expect people who never had western education to know its importance? How would they have known that the bomb they use as weapon was a product of western education. How would they know that the vehicle that they drive about is a product of western education? What they need is a new orientation. Also, it is high time every state starts to implement child right act. It is high time the government takes the issue of record keeping serious. The government that has no record of its citizens will find it difficult to monitor the movement of it people. All hands must be on deck.

Zainab SalehThe question that everyone should have in mind is that Why is it that series of bomb blast dont occur years back when Nigeria use to be a peaceful country.. Nigeria is no more what it use to be in the past 20 years.. Everyone is fed with the current administration because there is massive poverty and unemployment in the country and the government are not in anyway willing to bring a positive change to the country.. The rich are getting richer while the poor are getting poorer. Nigeria is a Great Nation and Change is what we really deserve now.

Bamidele OgunwaleAlumajiri in the northern Nigeria is a time bomb. The world is changing fast but power oligarchy in the Northern Nigeria are sleeping. For time immemorial they resisted efforts to change Almumajiri system of education. In the other arab world and muslim countries I don't think there is any where they operate this hopeless Alumajiri system of education. The Alumajiri are ever ready for destruction of lives and properties. Alumajiri wretched of the earth, with no live comfort materials than tattered cloths they wear are ever ready to kill under the guise of religion Alumajiri live hopeless lives and taught by Mallams of doubtful qualifications. The weakness of Nigeria state is also another factor. Years upon years which wanton destruction of lives and properties have been taking place in the northern Nigeria not a single person has been prosecuted in law court.

The writer sited example on how USA and the west failed in their bids to tackle such miscreants. He also sited how the militants activities in the niger delta was resolved. But to you [Dominic] as long as these people are northerners and muslims, they should be crushed. THAT IS YOUR THINKING.

Comment from: Abdulazeez [Visitor]
AbdulazeezYour presentation and opinion is fantastic. It is only the leaders who are egocentric, who don't want to manage people and resources equitably that caused all these. Even the so called BOko Haram were western educated elites who sensed that all is not well in Nigeria, and even the so called democracy is a sham for all the elections, coupled with embezzlement, corruption, nepotism, immorality, drug abuse, witch-hunting, etc which were still evident in Nigeria. As long as injustices & unemployment is flowing in Nigeria many organisations like boko haram will continue to emerge in the Nigerian State. Leaders should please put the interest of people first before themselves and their family, relatives, etc.

Ramsey OsawaruI am well please by your article. You see, Nigeria's is like a BAD parent's who derive pleasure when is Sons/Daughters is going astray, when all this issues of Boko Harram first started and them take urgent attention to quench it, i think by this time it should have be a story of the past. Any way, you cannot use instrument of violence to settle dispute as the American and British does, the better way is to invite all parties that is involve and by then we will find solution to it. I commend President Jonathan for his comment.

DAUDA MOHAMMEDAm in agreement with mr Kola.We need proper records of our citizens,we can use the village head to emirs, obas, obis and Attahs let all family heads bring list of his family members if possible with their pictures. We are talking about unemployed how many people,we don't know, population we are saying 150 million or 140 we don't know the exact fiqure. The point here is that we will be able to trace perpetrators of this type of act to their root with proper record they are not ghost or invicible we eat and drink with them.

clintonAll the points that have been made are very vital and correct but one thing we must note it the fact that these people are hugely mislead by their people who are in positions of authority that are surpose to teach them otherwise. Its really a shame and quite disturbing.
Jst as the saying goes "if the only person who is surpose to tell you the truth is actually the one feeding you with lies" what do u do?

dasanuThanks, you have said all. What I under stood by B/Haram is that the western education is not the problem but the western culture inherited from the western education. Our cultures have been forgotten, behaviours changed and honesty turn to deceit all because our leather are no more leaders but rulers, no truth. We have enough resources to give free education to Nigerian children from primary to secondary school. The govt. failed us, hence people did not know the value of education ( western ).Is stealing(corruption)Biblical or Quranic? Lets address the issue well not physical combat, God will help us.

Comment from: Muhammad s. usman [Visitor] Email
Muhammad s. usmanWhat Does Islam Say about Terrorism?

Islam, a religion of mercy, does not permit terrorism. In the Quran, God has said:

God does not forbid you from showing kindness and dealing justly with those who have not fought you about religion and have not driven you out of your homes. God loves just dealers. (Quran, 60:8)

The Prophet Muhammad used to prohibit soldiers from killing women and children,1 and he would advise them: {...Do not betray, do not be excessive, do not kill a newborn child.}2 And he also said: {Whoever has killed a person having a treaty with the Muslims shall not smell the fragrance of Paradise, though its fragrance is found for a span of forty years.}3

Also, the Prophet Muhammad has forbidden punishment with fire.4

He once listed murder as the second of the major sins,5 and he even warned that on the Day of Judgment, {The first cases to be adjudicated between people on the Day of Judgment will be those of bloodshed.6}7

Muslims are even encouraged to be kind to animals and are forbidden to hurt them. Once the Prophet Muhammad said: {A woman was punished because she imprisoned a cat until it died. On account of this, she was doomed to Hell. While she imprisoned it, she did not give the cat food or drink, nor did she free it to eat the insects of the earth.}8

He also said that a man gave a very thirsty dog a drink, so God forgave his sins for this action. The Prophet was asked, “Messenger of God, are we rewarded for kindness towards animals?” He said: {There is a reward for kindness to every living animal or human.}9

Additionally, while taking the life of an animal for food, Muslims are commanded to do so in a manner that causes the least amount of fright and suffering possible. The Prophet Muhammad said: {When you slaughter an animal, do so in the best way. One should sharpen his knife to reduce the suffering of the animal.}10

In light of these and other Islamic texts, the act of inciting terror in the hearts of defenseless civilians, the wholesale destruction of buildings and properties, the bombing and maiming of innocent men, women, and children are all forbidden and detestable acts according to Islam and the Muslims. Muslims follow a religion of peace, mercy, and forgiveness, and the vast majority have nothing to do with the violent events some have associated with Muslims. If an individual Muslim were to commit an act of terrorism, this person would be guilty of violating the laws of Islam.

Comment from: Olujobi A O [Visitor]
Olujobi A OMost commentators are missing the point here. Most of the masterminds of these religious problems are highly educated. They only hide under religion to protest against various kinds of neglect and injustice in the country. The govt will only do well to call them to a round table to find out what they are protesting against and how to solve the problems.

Comment from: Nwosu [Visitor] Email
NwosuI agree that something is wrong with our leaders but what i find difficult to believe is to assume that boko haram is fighting injustice. How can a sect hide under a religion to massacre their fellow nigerians. Why are they not killing all the NASS members and governors from their states. Their targeted undience is christians and churches. GEJ should wake up. This issue is not the one for dialogue. Why muslims are calling for dialogue is because boko haram has islamic face. No body has asked govt to dialogue with MASSOB.

SOULSYou have all made valid and vital points, but the question is if we all decide to carry guns and bombs to kill innocent people all in the name of fighting for justice, then whose justice are we fighting for. Zainab SalehSarah and Kola.. I read ur comments and I believe this have nothing to do with Western Education. The question in mind is that, Why is it that there are so many people around the Nation or should I say around the Globe that are not educated and yet they still dont act violently in anyway? What Nigeria needs is prayers and right now my prayers for this Loving Nation is that May God have mercy on this Country.

Zainab SalehWhat I understand is that people are fed with everyting that is going on in this country. And they believe that since the government are not willing to change, the only way for the government to respond quickly to the needs of the masses is through violence.. But I do not support violence in this country. Violence causes more harm than good. Nigeria is a great Nation and I hope someday soon, things will get better.

Comment from: nigerian [Visitor]
nigerianActually, i condemn the measures the Boko haram is takingin expressing their plight. God will save us all as a nation, but the fact still lies in what Zainab saleh said. Why there were no protesting against the nation during the time of our founding fathers when the literacy level of western education is by far, lower than now. It is because the citizen were satisfied by the way the government of that time conducted the affairs in the interest of the people. The citizens saw no injustice by the govt againt them. Leaders of the time were so honest that they can sacrifice their leisure in the interest of the led. And with many good conducts like these by the leaders, everybody was busy building the nation. The govt should dialogue with them, investigate their doings and make sure justice is done by carrying out legal punishment on the culprits to deter any group that will emulate them; but that is not enough. THAT IS NOT ENOGH AT ALL! What i think they are protesting in a wrong way is a change of attitude by the govt from bad TO A GOOD ATTITUDE. Leaders should be God fearing.

njidda ibrahimThey have never said their name is Boko Haram and they have never answered same, is a kind of give dog a bad name, some of them holds better certs than most of these commentators. What is happening is reciprocal to the grave injustices in the government of PDP, coupled with the poor police organization who are embedded in high level corruption and poor crisis management techniques. In fact the police did eighty percent of the killing during any crisis. pls. consider leaving in a country with plenty wealth but still we dont have electricity, water, hospitals, roads, security, education, employment, food, rule of law, but corruption......and still you expect peace. PDP government have killed the citizens of this country economically, because of their complex corrupt capability in all facet of life, what we are experiencing now could be the beginning of the end,the so call boko haram seem to be gaining public support, i think they are fighting the system not the common man, refer to katsina episode shearing their loot to the common men.

AdamsI have read most of the comments and opinion, but we seem to be missing some hard facts. 1. Boko Haram certainly is not fighting any injustice. 2. They cannot be likened to Niger Delta Militants or any other agitating group in Nigeria. 3. They are clearly a crude Terrorist group emerging. Where on earth have we seen a group killing fellow citizens in the name of fighting injustice, directing aggression on the ordinary people, unleashing horror and pain. Contentions of the Niger Delta Militants, appear very logical, rational and sensible.Boko haram is no more than a terrorist- religious extremists being hatched for political purpose. If they are crying out, though improperly, due to bad leadership, they should turn to their northern Political leaders who have had greater hold to power of this nation; who have contributed immensely to plunder this nation.

Bala YusufI do not share view with those having solidarity for Boko Haram. These are people who read the scripture and understood it their own way and they rose up to demand that everyone must share belief with them. Islam is a beautiful religion that deals with every human affair. The religion abhors the use of force to spread ones belief, but the leaders of the boko haram recruited innocent and ignorant children and fix in them the idea that anyone who does not believe in your belief does not deserve to die.The children then become killing machines and turn the society into hell. They are doing great harm to Islam and Muslims and we should stand to condemn them. You dont just fight to help Allah spread his religion. Allah has the powers to turn the entire world into muslims if He so wishes. There is no need for dialogue with this group and the securities should rise up to the occasion and counter them for the good of Islam, Muslims and the entire nation.

Far From Homethis is in response particularly to Bala Yusuf. Bala, i suspect you are a Muslim. If my assumption is right, the i commend your faithfulness to your religion, and your objectivity in the midst of varying conflicting and confusing opinions. Boko Haram thinks that Allah is lame and cannot fight for himself. Government should invest more in security and meeting the needs of the poor masses that rewarding Boko Haram with a dialogue. If government is bent on doing this, then they might as well call every armed robber to the table for a dialogue. What i have heard read and seen about Boko Haram is nothing other than first degree felony. They are criminals and not Muslims. I have Muslim friends and i know that a true Muslim is not criminal-minded.

Does that mean that they were illiterate b4 is now that their eyes is open?what ever, i jst want to tell Boko Haram members that we the northerners know what they have at heart and know where they are heading to,and i still want to let them know that if really the God we are serving is a living one then they must surely regret the innocent blood been shared and their evil motives will never be achieved.

dantelets call a spade a spade. let us stop being deplomatic believing the british did right for creating nigeria. let give the boko haram their country and supporters of buhari their country that went about burning the north and let jonathan have his country. u ll never understand this untill you find yourself in the far noth and realised as a christian and a non hausa u re never welcome. and a target of hate.im vex bcos i see no reason the correlation between jonathan being elected and my church that was razed down by haters and ever since im not free to practice my religion. what a country! lets us have a soverength national conference so that those that want the sharia as their law to have their country and those that wants a secular country to have their ways.. each new country will survive on its own.

Agbaje Abbas OluwaseunI am somehow satisfied with the submissions of the writer and I commend his objectivity. As a Muslim,I find no place for any activity of boko haram in my heart. The tenets of Islam is quite clear for all Muslim faithfuls.Unfortunate it is, that some misinformed people try to make a rubbish of their muslim identities. In several places in the Quran, Allah enjoins Muslims to seek peace and shun disorderliness(e.g Q2V11).It is therefore strange when we witness such despicable acts as being perpetrated by the boko haram members attributed to teachings of the Quran. No doubt,it's a political war dressed in religious garb.Nigerian government needs to awake to its responsibilities by ensuring securities of life and properties. Not by equipping the arm forces but by being just to every citizen, providing them their basic and fundamental needs.God help Nigeria.

anonymouswhen will Nigerians face the real truth and fact, the police themselves are the most lawless in NIGERIA, they are behind every crime in Nigeria, and simply wearing that uniform they forgot we are in a democratic regime and maltreat fellow NIGERIANS, if groups like this don't act against them, then we are all slaves to the police and people in power, the government is the most corrupt and lawless and no one blames them, for their act.

We've all sold our rights in Nigeria, i was driving through a police check point recently and was stopped the police man who stopped me came to my side and then i rolled down the glass, saying "how can i help you" can you imagine what the stupid police man said? " can you help me " and he then turned it into something else claiming the statement is rude, and even the idiot heading the check point supported the illiterate saying i am rude, can someone please tell me whats wrong in what i said, maybe am the one getting things wrong.

ACTS like this is what led this so called groups to rebel, lets not support the government for the masses, because the government are modernly enslaving us. and we called this a democratic rule, we put them there to tell them what we want not what they want.

Nigerians forget that we are making money and we font want war, whether we like it or not the war will start someday, this is how revolutionary started in Liberia, i guess we are yet to be pushed to the wall, left for me i can war against this people if given the resources.

Let the government cancel what ever is called NPF, and bring up a new force to cub crime rather than NPF which molest civilians. now their tradition in the so called NPF is to arrest boiz collecting from the whites, they are not going to prosecute them or hand over them to the right authority, but collect huge sums from them, i guess they are doing this because they are legalized to carry gun, pls Game boiz or yahoo boiz as widely known, start buying arms and ammunitions with the money you make and start exchanging war with this lazy thieves who claim they are policemen. even some of the policemen are into the yahoo game themselves and they still go about harassing boiz. am not saying its right to scam, but everyone is using whats is in their reach to get what they want, government buy everything with money, police obtain by scope with guns, so civilian should do something too. and come to think of it, 50% of the assholes in NPF are lazy fags, and i can lay a bet that a police man can never win me in a hand to hand or one on one fight. and most boiz can even dis arm a police man of his gun.

reason with me Nigerians its our country we are not slaves.

Mr BeeI must say that Kalli's article paints a clear picture of Nigeria's problem. There is no doubt that our leaders are responsible for what Nigeria is today. But the question is how many of the so-called leaders have lost their lives or property to the ongoing killings and destruction of lives and property? Is it not the poor masses who are still being killed and their houses destroyed? Moreover, why is it that houses of worship are also attacked? I believe that we can get out of the woods without shedding blood or destroying property: it only serves to compound the problem. If a group of persons feels bad about the sordid state of affairs in the country, there are better means to correct the problem. The people of Egypt have shown us a good example- collective revolt. That is what we need. Let all Nigerians come out and let's result. Lastly, let me say that Kalli's use of the pictures of the mutilated body of the late leader of the Boko Haram sect is not necessary. It is inciteful and can further errupt more disaffections in the minds of the people, especially his followers. However, inspite of the observations made, Kalli's article is indeed a stitch in time and a bone for our leaders to chew.

If the government becomes the lawbreaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy, but for the sake of BOKO HARAM. I am muslem, and I believe in their theory that western education is forbidden, see what the western education destroy IRAQ & other African countries. Mohammed Qasimgreat article, thanks to kali. to every single occurence either evil or good, there is always a reason. am afraid! the cause of this bombing might increase geometrically because the goverment has failed to address and analyse the root of the problem and as such to profer solution will not be that easy. You can only profer solution to the problem you can analyse and willing to solve. Using force and war to solve violence only aggravate the condition and make it more worsen. imagine how police kills an innocenties becus of token, how the goverment deprive us of our right at their own detriment, armed robbers every where, army instead of being in the war front are not helping matters within the communities, politicians also serve as an accomplice for crime act and killing. as a matter of fact, people are not happy at all with all these aformentioned problems including myself. so why wont b/haram destroys and kills? afterall, police and other forces kill innocent too. The goverment need to really reform their leadership way of life ASAP, if not nigeria is going to turn into libya....

David123The root cause of religion is insecurity. This is presented by the correlation in countries with low standard of living yet high religious ( often extremist ) values, this contrasts the correlation in countries with high standard of living where all primary objectives are secured allowing them to focus on a scientific approach to life. In conclusion developed countries primary objectives are for-filled freeing the population's subconscious of the reaction to insecurity.

Comment from: Yunus Abdul Kabir Olanrewaju [Visitor]
Yunus Abdul Kabir OlanrewajuAm obliged with the writers effort. How can a religion (Islam) give great regard to acquisition of knowledge while some people today hide under same religion to perpetrate evil base on their selfish whim saying acquisition of (western) knowledge (boko harram). Didn't the Holy Prophet (s.a.w) say "acquisition of knowledge is from cradle to grave", "Words of wisdom is the lost property of a muslim so he shuold acquire it where ever he finds it as he is the most entitled to it" etc. So why the killing of souls..? It is illicit and not of the teachings of islam. Islam teaches modesty, peace, tolerance, unity, etc. In fact, one murder is equal to the killing of the whole Humanity in islam and its eminent in Quran 6:32 it states "Whoever slays a soul, unless it be for a manslaughter, or for mischief in the land, it is as though he slew all men; and whoever kips it alive; it is as though he kept alive all men." Also all the believers are sons of Adam (a.s) and brothers to one another. One who kills another person perpetrates a great evil and instigates a great feeling of malice, revenge and hatred among people. Sucide is also regarded as murder in islam (Quran 4:29-30) says "...and do not kill yourselves; surely Allah is Merciful to you. And whoever does this aggressively and unjustly, We will soon cast him into fire; and this is easy for Allah.". Islam does not recognise boko haram. Nigeria has a greater future if only we can unite ourselves and work as one while our government should implement chapter four of the 1999 constitution. Better Nigeria I pray.
