I think this writer is a man of genuine guts, mature and humane. The truth must be said. Islam may claim that these blood thirsty devils are "only" hiding under the cloke of Islam to perpetrate evil but the truth remains that Islam provided that cloke. What do I mean? These beasts would not have any excuses for killing if Islam is in no way violent. Islam has always been violent. It advanced and continues to advance by violence. Violence is inherent in Islam. It is enshrined in the Quran and that is why you cannot separate violence from Islam. That is one of the reasons I disagree with those who say that Islam and Christianity serve the same person. Please note that there is not a single verse in the entire Christian Bible that contains this "open-ended", universal command to kill/or be ruthless to unbelievers. I am a proud yoruba man and I have always known that ojukwu was right. Nigeria has to split. Hausas are a major problem to the federation. Igbos may be uneducated as some people say, but who are the most industrial group of people in Nigeria, Igbo right? The south-west region is a mixture of the christians, moslems and the traditionnal worshipers and how many times have you heard of religious fighting in the region? it is there but rare. The problem of the north is illiteracy. If we divide, we all suffer at first but we are going to reap the benefits later. The north will go back into their "groundnut pyramids" and make effective use of the sunlight, the south-south- they will learn to manage their oil well coz they need to eat and most of their lands are not arable. We have continually allowed frivolities and mediocrity eaten so deep into our system for the cause of tribe and religion. A nation that shy away from hard work and merit is bound to fail regardless of the religious sect or tribe governing it.Leaders should lead by example and followers should criticize with fair sense of judgement, proffering sensible and unbiased solution to problems.
Our Society today celebrates success without investigating how it's been achieved. Politicians bribe electorates to get to political offices,parents bribe teachers for there wards to pass WAEC,undergraduates swindle over the internet to be millionaires etc,yet we blame our adversities on tribe and religion. we should as a nation be truthful to ourselves,promote merit and also be an active member of our society by guiding our leaders and act as if we have no place to go.

The gargantuan economic and political shenanigan and malfeasance allegedly perpetrated and superintended by the immediate past Governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sheriff, are gradually being unravelled. The alleged atrocities of the ex-Governor are two or three dimensional, and each has far reaching consequences to Borno State in particular and the Northern part of the country at large. The most recent is the allegation that Ali Sheriff indeed was the mastermind of the spate of political killings of fellow party soul mates, which has long been insinuated to be an insider work, robed in the garb of Boko Haram but which in reality was just a smokescreen to hoodwink the people.

The truth about most of the killings of high level politicians in Borno State has since been found to have nothing to do with the Boko Haram sect, which has, in most cases, dissociated itself from them for the umpteenth time.

It has come to light that the recent arrests of some core members of the notorious gang of political hooligans and suspected ”killer ECOMOG” by the military on the allegation that the gang members were responsible for those politically motivated killings of former gubernatorial candidate of the ANPP, Fannami Gubio, and ex ANPP North East Chairman, Awana Ngala, as well as the sudden transfer of Major General Mohammed Monguno as the Chief of Defence Intelligence, who after intelligence gathering on the activities of Ali Sheriff’s ‘ECOMOG’ reportedly organised the arrest of the alleged murderers, were all the handiwork of the immediate past governor of Borno State.

Major General Babagana Monguno, is Borno’s only serving two-star General. It has long been reasonably argued by observers that the senseless killings of mostly ANPP members cannot be the work of Boko Haram militants who have long established the reputation of carefully picking their targets, most times writing to such targets and owning up to it after the deed has been done. The rush by Ali Sheriff to always pre-empt such issues by immediately blaming opposition political elements for such politically motivated killings as well as his penchant to rush to Abuja allegedly with millions of Dollars to bribe key security officials tended to sway the belief that he indeed has something to hide.

General Monguno, an indigene of Borno State and in his position as Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI) of the Nigerian Army according to credible inside sources that pleaded not to be mentioned was said to have gotten sufficient and justifiable security reasons to suspect foul play in the spate of killings in the state and after going through the routine of further checks and obtaining the necessary superior go-ahead sent a company of about two hundred undercover operatives from his unit and landed them in Borno State to go underground and investigate the genesis of the killings and check out who could have been responsible for them. Monguno’s effort according to them has unravelled so much about the man Ali Sheriff and how he allegedly uses armed political thugs like the “ECOMOG” to silence any political obstacle, threat or to pave the way for the grand plan to succeed.

Between February through April 2011, according to reports, the military intelligent agents conducted thorough investigation and found out that some members of the dreaded Ali Sheriff’s personal political thugs known as “ECOMOG” have been the key perpetrators of such killings and it soon dawned on the nation’s security organs that these political thugs have systematically been trained and armed to the teeth by their paymaster who unleashed them on the state with orders to kill fellow political associates in order to create fear and generate tension to justify the deployment of thousands of armed soldiers and policemen into the state, shift the blame to the Boko Haram elements, put the PDP on the defensive so as to make some political capital out of it, spread fear in the state to find cover to commit political atrocities, rig the May 2011 general elections, silence political associates seen as a threat to his political calculations and generally cause an upheaval to detract people and government from insisting on instituting a probe into the large scale and unpardonable financial recklessness that was reportedly the order of the day in his eight year rule of “unspeakable and unprecedented thievery of the common patrimony of Borno State”, a source lamented.

DESERT HERALD learnt that as soon as the complicity of the political thugs in the killings was established, General Monguno was ordered to pick those involved for further interrogation to establish the nature of their operations and to get across to their financiers to make them answer to their misdeeds and to bring the killings to an end. In the cause of investigation in Abuja where the notorious political thugs were taken to, this paper gathered that the accused persons developed cold feet and begged not to be tortured and offered to fully cooperate. They were said to have sang like canaries by first admitting that the guns they were using to kill were procured and given to them as well as told who to kill by Ali Modu Sheriff. An insider amongst the team of interrogators told this newspaper that at the end of it all, incontrovertible facts were established as to the culpability of Ali Sheriff as the man who has been responsible for the deterioration of security in Borno State.

It was at this point, this reporter learnt, that the true colours of Ali Sheriff came to light. Long before this stage the former governor who woefully lost his bid to return to the senate on account of his unpopularity in the state and his alleged role in the uprising has according to keen observers of Borno politics established a reputation as “Nigeria’s most reckless, most audacious and most free-spending briber. He has, since his emergence as Governor, been able to reach out to many top government, security, electoral and judicial officials who could be of help in any of his political enterprise”. It was alleged that since he was able to compromise as high a person as former President Obasanjo, no Nigerian, no matter his pedigree could extricate himself from the Ali Sheriff’s bribery machine. Our sources in Abuja revealed that even before this revelation of complicity in the political murders, no one, either in the presidency or anywhere of substance that has not, at one time or the other, benefitted from the largesse of Ali Sheriff and at very monumental level. An insider confided in this paper that the Chief of Staff in the presidency of Goodluck Jonathan was known by many as the one advancing the Ali Sheriff’s notoriety in the presidency. He further disclosed on condition of anonymity that “the National Security Adviser, top level INEC officials, top level judicial officers, top military and police brass have allegedly been on the payroll of Ali Sheriff and it is through them that the ex governor is reputed to be capable of sabotaging any untoward searchlight on him or his activities particularly those related to the Boko Haram sect and his relationship with late Mohammed Yusuf”.

An associate of the former governor, who has recently fallen out with him and who run the most recent bribery errand for him, told our Correspondent in confidence that a total of Fifty Million Dollars was shared among some top security officials to put a stop to the investigation on his complicity in the murders, to sack General Monguno from the headship of the investigating panel and his posting as the Chief of Defence Intelligence as well as the release of some of the suspects from detention. Even though the Chief of Defence Staff was said to have done his level best to stop anybody from sabotaging the case or transferring General Monguno out of his unit, he soon capitulated according to insiders and as today, Ali Sheriff has succeeded in achieving two of his demands. The investigation our source revealed has stopped all together and General Monguno, Borno’s only two-star General in the Nigerian Army, has been relieved of his duties and has since been posted as Chief of Army Logistics. Another reliable source confided in this paper that the process of persecuting him which may lead to his eventual sack from the Army has started. In fact, Ali Sheriff was overheard bragging in Saudi Arabia during the last Ramadan Umrah that “he has brought General Monguno down and will soon orchestrate his sack from the military altogether”, our source revealed.

DESERT HERALD Correspondent, who was also in Saudi Arabia during the Umrah and who stumbled on this information, also learnt that the next assignment for the former governor is to get “his killer squad out of detention and freed to continue with their killing spree. Ali Sheriff swore, in the presence of many people including politicians that nobody in Nigeria can cause him any harm even if all the security agencies were able to establish anything against him. He believed that the entire chain in the prosecution process has been compromised and cannot therefore act against him,” our source in Saudi Arabia confirmed overhearing Ali Sheriff as boasting.

Apart from unravelling the involvement of Ali Sheriff’s “ECOMOG” in most of the politically motivated killings in Borno by the Defense Intelligence of the Nigerian Army under its former head, Gen. Monguno, what devastated Sheriff again and compel him to reachout to various security agencies and to plot the removal of the Borno born Army General from the intelligence unit of the army as exclusively gathered by DESERT HERALD is the alleged culpability of his brother in-law, Abba Lawan Dawud in the murder of the former chairman of Jere Local Government, late Mustapha Bale by Gen. Monguno’s unit. Bale’s assassination was initially blamed on the Boko Haram sect but our security sources revealed that there is enough evidence that link the blood brother of Fati Ali Sheriff, Lawan Dawud in Bale’s murder. Abba Lawan Dawud apart from being an in-law to Ali Sheriff equally serve as his SA before he was made a member of the Federal House of Representatives on the influence of the once powerful Maman Borno, Fati Ali Sheriff.

When it appears glaring that Dawud is in trouble and may be arrested by Monguno for the alleged murder of Mustapha Bale a credible source confided in DESERT HERALD, Fati Ali Sheriff in desperation to save her brother visited the mother of Gen. Monguno and pleaded with her to prevail in her son to halt or frustrate further investigation on the issue as the only alternative of sparing Dawud from possible arrest and prosecution. When her effort failed and Gen. Monguno vowed to ensure justice and save Borno from such unwarranted political killings according to our source, her husband, Ali Sheriff took over with alleged bribery of millions of naira to ensure Monguno’s sack as the head of the intelligence unit hence his abrupt and unceremonious exit as the head of intelligence agency.

Under Mr. Jonathan’s presidency according to some military sources that don’t want their names in print, “the Northern part of the country is already being decimated in the Army with top officers targeted for persecution. Another Major General, Sarkin Yaki Bello, who once headed the Joint Task Force, which brought peace in the Niger Delta, and who was until recently, the GOC 82nd Division of the Nigerian Army, was recently transferred out and is now relegated to a Special Adviser to the President on Terrorism”, one of the source revealed. Several other officers of Northern extraction according to him, who hold sensitive positions in the Army, have been targeted for the same fate and it is under this emergency situation that Ali Sheriff is allegedly throwing money around to add salt to the injury of the North.

But DESERT HERALD findings revealed that apart from the controversial removal of Gen. Monguno recently from the intelligence unit of the army, the Nigeria Military still maintains the culture of balance and competence in postings and appointments and has done so much recently to ensure that politics did not infiltrate its rank and file.

In truth and to many Ali Sheriff has proved to be a master briber. He is known as capable of offering any amount to a person he believes holds the key to realizing his objectives. A former commissioner in his cabinet told this reporter that “Sheriff has been able to deliberately amass so much wealth through massive looting of the treasury with the purpose of positioning himself to compromise people in the prosecution chain in order to have his ways. When former EFCC Boss Nuhu Ribadu disqualified Ali Sheriff alongside others from contesting the 2007 elections based on proven cases of corruption, Ali Sheriff was alleged to have gone to President Obasanjo, prostrated at the foot of Obasanjo, shedding tears and begging for the president’s intervention. Ribadu was alleged to have been summoned to the Villa where he met Sheriff in a pitiable state still at the foot of Obasanjo. The rest of what happened was known to everybody. In reality, Obasanjo sees himself as the godfather to Ali Sheriff purely on the basis of Sheriff’s total abeyance, loyalty and capacity to do the old man’s biddings including ferrying foreign damsels on chartered flights from as far a place as Ethiopia. Along the way, Sheriff got close to Obasanjo when he found a way to transport trailer loads of specially fattened cows to the Otta farm as well as running some very despicable errands all at the expense of the people of Borno State. Obasanjo was alleged to have stooped so low as receiving cash gratification running into billions of Naira from the former governor.

The question to ask is: Is the Nigerian security and judicial system as soulless and unpatriotic as to fall prey to this individual whose only strong point is that he has money to spread about but whose action is clearly plunging this country into a cauldron of violence capable of tearing Nigeria apart? Is Ali Sheriff going to get his wish of getting confirmed murderers out of detention? Can he compromise top military officers to get a two star General into trouble leading to his alleged persecution for daring to do his job? How can the presidency of Goodluck Jonathan achieve lasting peace in Borno and other parts of the country while alleged perpetrators of the uprising and the political killings are allegedly using the presidency to always have their ways? Can the president fight the so called terrorism and win in such brazen display of double standard? Can it be achieved in a nation where many other privileged citizens like Sheriff are clearly above the law and in a nation where money can do anything? Can Nigeria afford to go through such ignoble killing era just because one man wanted it to be so? Must Nigeria go to blazes in order for a known individual to go free? Are we that liverle
