*BASA Controversies- Truth Should Be Told

By Kolawole Adeoti

I wish to comment on the lingering controversy going round in the aviation industry in the country. If you could recall, there was a move to reduce the frequencies of British Airways to Lagos from 7 days a week to 3 days a week. This action was alledged to have been prejudiced on the BASA agreement with UK. This is a blatant show of shame on the part of our government officials. The critical questions to ask are "Why is it that the government officials remember the BASA agreement when Arik frequencies was reduced at Heathrow?. Is Arik Air a National Carrier? What is the connection of British Airport Authority (BAA) with British Airways? I wonder whether people forget the anticident of Arik Air as to the ways the Airline owes every airports it patronised. ( Continues below..... )

Reports say one of the Airbus was recently seized in South Africa because of Debt. Sierra Leone Airport Authority also seized one of the planes because of debt, ASL was reported to have gotten a judgement debt over Arik and seize one of its planes in Kano, not to talk of over N4billion the airline is owing FAAN and other agencies. One wonders, why our government officials will want to indulge in this kind of show of shame: Do they realise the effect of what they are trying to do? ( Continues below….. )

It will send wrong signal to the International Community at this time that we are campaining for Direct Foreign Investment. BA has established her clientele for the past 75years of operations. There is nothing anybody can do to make British Airways customers to go and fly Arik. The most annoying part of the issue is, as we understand, that BA pays its dues regularly while for the past one year, Arik refused to pay a dime to Aviation agencies even the Passenger Service Charges that Arik collects on behalf of FAAN are being held by it. We should be careful of our actions and watch the after effect of it.

efosaGood thinking, and good points. Aren't you aware that, Arik is owned by some useless and greedy politicians, who for their selfish interest, bastardised the then Nigerian Airways and destroyed Virgin Nigeria. Nigerians are being killed by libyan terrorists and militants who claime to be freedom fighters. What's been said by the Nigerian foreign miniter? i guess nothin. You can see that their business is what they are fighting for, and not the interest of the Nigerian people. I'm not trying to say the British Government is innocent, simple!

markThat is unbalanced report and infact an abuse of ur media spinning. Was Arik frequency reduced bcos of debt? What is it wrong for an obsolete aggreement to be reviewed after 75yrs.Must a nation like Nigeria be treated like a dust bin always. Not until so called 3rd world nations starts to reason like the British themselves where the interest and image of the country comes first .Pls build ur country and stop giving more undeserve power to other nation.Good or bad am a naija unfortunately and when am still alive i should be able to read btw the lines .

DominicI strongly commend the rare government's efforts to defend the economic interest of its citizens. Many Nigerian airlines are denied access to many lucrative routes for questionable excuses. Nigerians have had to endure long journeys home from the US because there is hardly any direct flights to Nigeria, the reason being that only foreign airlines operate Nigerian flights. I encorage those who jump into these frays aught to get the facts before they post comments that betray their naivety. This is one of the rare occasions the government has risen to do its jobs. Kudos.

Ogidiolu BankoleWhatever can be done to improve services to the travellers is wellcome. I reside in New York and wellcome Arik airline. The British Airline from New York to London is always better than from London to Lagos : better aircrafts. I no longer fly BA to Nigeria because of my concern. Now I come back to New york from London to fly ARIK to Nigeria. Arik should compete with other airlines by providing the best services . Goverment should create the environment for fair competetion. Arik should not have monopoly either.

Akinwande ThomasThe current situation its lack of leadership this problem is ajiborisa and useless fanikayode we need our own national carrier. We can not be slave under british every time more especially situation about British Airways and Arik Air why is that british airways wants to dominate any nigerian airlines. What they can't tolerate in Britain its fault of so call ministers who can't act on behave of Arik Air even nigerians talk bad about Arikair. I think british airways should come to lagos 3 days week not 7 days. I have enter Arikair they have best service british airways with their irresponsible attitude. They sould ban BA from Nigeria enough is a enough

LAMI KATCHYthe solution to this problem is for nigeria to have a national carrier so that when we are figting we know we r fighting for the nation.but for now Arik air is the only airline from naija so we must support it.i used it last year from abuja to uk and back and i can tell you that it was the best i ever experienced in terms of movement but i must also state here that they need to improve on their services so as to get more patronage from naija.Afterall BA has the largest market world wide from Naija.
