*Nigeria: NAMA Set To Implement Aviation Telecommunication Policy
By Lateef Lawal
Nigerian Airspace Management Agency(NAMA) is to with immediate effect begin the implementation of the Aviation Telecommunication Policy with the aim of streamlining users of the facilities and also generate revenue. This came to light November 29, at the presentation of the policy document to the Managing Director of NAMA, Mazi Nnamdi Udoh by the Chairman of the committee, Mr Dotun Oni who is also the General Manager, Business Development of the agency.
While receiving the document, Mazi Udoh commended members of the committee for a job well done and that there was no time to waste in the execution of the recommendations contained in the policy document. He said instead of constituting another committee for the implementation of the document, members of the committee are to see to the immediate execution of the recommendations for the benefits of the Agency, the airlines, other stakeholders and the country at large. He also enjoined all the staff of the Agency to shun rumour mongering in the cause of their duties ,adding that if anyone was in doubt on any issue, such a staff should feel free to come forward or meet with his/her superior for clarification instead of spreading falsehood which could be detrimental to the well-being of not only the staff as a whole but also the Agency from where they draw their salaries and other wellfare packages. Part of the recommendations already adopted by the management for immediate implementation are:
*NAMA shall undertake a comprehensive inventory of all telecommunication infrastuctures/services deployed at all airports
*Meet with all the owners of of such infrastructures deployed and services provided to come up with terms and conditions for their continued operations within the airports
*Enter into formal agreement with NAMA for their continued operations in all the airports as provided by the statute setting up the Agency.
The objectives of the new telecommunications policy, will among others serve as a guide to NAMA management in granting approvals for the provision and deployment of telecommunication facilities in all the airports across the country and ensure that NAMA derives appropriate recompense in the service agreements entered into.
The full implementation of the agreement will also minimise and prevent potential interference with air navigation systems which may compromise the safety and security of the country's airspace.
