-Masterweb Reports (Submission By Makanjuola Olaleye Ademola)

University of Lagos Goes Wireless - The University of Lagos is now going global by the day as wireless network is now been made available for students on the campus. The wireless network started at King JaJa hall of residence which is a male hostel, followed by Mariere hall which is also a male hostel. This wireless network is only accessible by all final year registered students except diploma students.

The wireless network has now been shifted to other hostels round the school where Elkanemi hall happens to be one of them. Elkanemi hall is one the first hostels in the school where almost every apartment is made of wood and students now call it ile pako (wooden hall). Interested students are to register their names with the University and their matric no would be used as the username and password would be selected by the student to access the internet.

Students in Elkanemi hall as at 11:36pm on the 5th of March rushed out of their room with their various laptops and connected to the internet as the wireless started working then. Fortunately, instead of making use of the internet for research purposes and to aid their studies, most students use the opportunity to chat with the social network known as facebook. During an interview with Shegun, a 200level psychology student, room 33 block 4 said, “Why would the University make the wireless network available to only final year students and not every students? We all need the internet for the same reasons.”

“I don’t even understand the wireless network of a thing, and how come the school knows when a final year uses it?” this was a statement by Jeff, a 300 level Sociologist student who was so naïve on how internet works.

Squatting In The Hostel - The Dean of Student Affairs, University said that there should be no room for squatting again because there are vacant spaces in the following hostels: Elkanemi, Shodende and Jaja hall.

Squatting has been a regular thing done by student since the creation of universities; this is due to lack of adequate spaces made available for students. The universities takes in more students compared to the availability of hostels for them to stay in.

These are what students say about the accommodation problem- Sheriff, a 200 level student of Engineering, University of Lagos said: “The students are not aware of the procedure to pass through in getting hostel accommodation.” Sheriff also said that hostels are not made available as at when due for students to pay for them and stay in. For the fact that some students live far away from school, most of them would not want to waste any time staying at home or waiting for hostels that might never come, so for this reason they have no other choice than to squat with a friend who already has one.

Sheriff said the school authorities should make proper awareness to new students coming in, and make enough hostel space available to every student those so desires.

Emmanuel, a 200 level student of Political Science, University of Lagos has this to say: “squatting is the illegal inheritance of a particular place.” He also said that squatting has been in the school for a very long time, and such a thing would not be stopped easily. He went further saying that drastic measures should be taken to end the tradition of squatting.

Emmanuel also said emphasized saying: “different strokes for different folks;” he said some students actually collects the fees for the hostel from their parent and went as long as striking a deal with a friend who would pay half of the money and squat with him/her. Students prefer to use the money to purchase things like the Blackberry Phone to using it to improve their status quo.

Emmanuel gave his experience while he was in Biobaku hall. He said they were eight people to a room at first. Suddenly, the number started increasing and they became close to 22 in one room. He also said. He said the school authorities should find a lasting solution to the squatting problem.

onarakucan school authority actually wipe out squatting. it is an uphill task because the number of students and the availabe bed spaces in all the halls have never and will take long if ever they will come level up. as an ex student, accommadation was a big problem in my days. in jaja hall there used to be a room or two that was/were designated ''ecowas''because the number of students that come out from ecowas bit human imagination. squatting cannot be 100% wipped out but it can be greatly reduced by building more hall for (m/f) and being considerate in the accommodation fees charged. on the internet wireless, bravo, ''a journey of many miles ............ so the halls that have not got this facility should be patient aferall ''rome wasn't built in a day. great akokites and great jajaites, i greet all of you.
